An ode to New York

Written by: Varsha Khemka

Imagine the bustling streets of New York City, where towering skyscrapers pierce the sky and the pulse of progress reverberates through every corner. In this concrete jungle, precision and efficiency are paramount in the realm of construction. Amidst the ceaseless drive for innovation, Avvir decided to help revolutionize the very foundation upon which the city is built. Since 2017, we’ve been redefining the construction technology landscape and leaving an indelible mark on the iconic cityscape. With our groundbreaking solutions and unwavering commitment, Avvir has harnessed the power of laser scanning and artificial intelligence to propel the construction industry into uncharted territories of productivity and precision. So, welcome to our ode to this remarkable city, the place where we were created, and see how our contributions have begun to reshape the very fabric of construction in the vibrant heart of the Big Apple.

What Avvir does:

Avvir is an AI technology startup that provides automated risk analysis for construction projects..

Avvir's core technology involves utilizing laser scanning, artificial intelligence, and computer vision to report on real time progress tracking and facilitate accurate 3D models of construction projects through deviation analysis. By comparing these models to the original design plans, Avvir's software can detect discrepancies, monitor progress, and identify potential issues in real time. This process aims to improve construction efficiency, reduce errors, and increase overall project quality.

Avvir's primary focus is on improving the efficiency and accuracy of construction projects through the use of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and 3D scanning. Its platform aims to streamline the construction verification process by automating the comparison between as-built conditions and the original design plans.

By utilizing laser scanning and computer vision techniques, Avvir analyzes highly detailed and precise 3D scans of construction sites. These scans are then compared against the building's original design plans to identify discrepancies, such as deviations from the intended specifications or potential errors in construction. This process helps project teams identify and address issues early, reducing costly rework and delays.

How NYC Construction Projects Utilize Avvir:

New York City is a city known for its significant construction projects and complex urban environment. Since our origin, Avvir's technology has had several benefits to the Owners and GC’s who have utilized the platform.

Improved Project Management:

Avvir's automated verification process provides real-time insights into construction progress, allowing project managers to track and monitor the status of projects more effectively. This  helps mitigate risks, optimize scheduling, and enhance overall project coordination.

Enhanced Quality Control:

Avvir's platform enables comprehensive quality control checks by comparing as-built conditions with design plans. This helps identify errors, omissions, or deviations early in the construction process, reducing rework and ensuring that projects meet the required quality standards.

Increased Transparency and Collaboration:

Avvir's technology facilitates better communication and collaboration among project stakeholders. By providing a shared platform where all parties can access and review the as-built data and design models, Avvir promotes transparency and enables efficient decision-making, which is crucial in complex construction projects.

Time and Cost Savings:

Through early detection of construction discrepancies, Avvir's platform can reduce the need for costly rework and change orders. By catching errors before they become significant issues, construction teams can save both time and money.

Avvir in Action in NYC:

Avvir has had the privilege of working on a diverse range of projects that span the spectrum of construction and architecture. In NYC alone, we’ve analyzed construction data across all verticals – from skyscrapers and high rise buildings to commercial and retail spaces. Avvir has also been an integral part of residential developments, university buildings and interior fit-outs. Adhering to the strict standards of accuracy, and the tight tolerances that a congested city like NYC require, Avvir has helped numerous customers to avoid rework - saving millions of dollars using deviation analysis.

Avvir progress reports have helped in understanding the status of the projects and have helped busy New Yorkers to use their resources efficiently. With the use of Avvir Progress 5D – investment bankers in NYC have been able to monitor their projects from a financial perspective to validate progress. The use of 5D BIM is a testament to how New Yorkers consistently push the boundaries to what is possible in construction with the use of Building Information and modeling.

NYC Project Spotlight - AECOM Tishman & Avvir:

The Project

AECOM is a world-class infrastructure consulting firm driven by a vision of a world where infrastructure creates opportunity for everyone – uplifting communities, improving access and sustaining our planet. AECOM Tishman is a fully owned subsidiary of AECOM and sits within their Construction Management business. Since 1898, AECOM Tishman has built more than 600 million square feet, managing some of the largest and most complex mixed-use and mega development projects

The Manhattan West mega project in NYC was an ideal candidate for deploying Avvir technology. With 4 mechanical floors and 236,966 SqFt involved, the Avvir suite of analysis tools was well placed to deliver an accurate system of record with meaningful project insights. Avvir Inspect deviation analysis and Avvir Progress® tracking were the solutions put to the test, plus several custom reports uniquely tailored to AECOM Tishman’s needs. Reality capture was conducted weekly, with Structionsite photo capture and terrestrial scans.

The Results
One project executive told us they were “able to track construction progress on a really granular level so it’s more meaningful to the building owner.” Superintendent Kevin Marren felt the step change in effectiveness immediately, telling our team he “could move faster, giving updates to the project team on a weekly basis so they could proactively get ahead of predicted clashes that had to be addressed in the field.”
